Trip Description:
After a short 10 minute ride, the van arrives at the
put-in at the south edge of Ellison Park. During the 10 minute trip to
Ellison Park, the driver will review general paddling tips and safety
precautions. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. After launching the
boats, paddlers will encounter some mild current for the first 100 yards, but
from then on the current will be substantially less. The creek meanders
through the south portion of the park before passing beside the Daisy Flower
Mill Restaurant and under Blossom Road. For the next mile, the creek twists
and turns through the meadows of the park passing underneath several wooden
pedestrian bridges and then leaves the parklands behind as it flows under
Browncroft Boulevard.
From this point, the land is in a much more natural state. Shortly after
Browncroft, the paddlers enter the "Canopy of Trees" area and float beneath a
ceiling of green. Beyond that, boaters enter the upper marsh where sighting
of beaver, muskrat, deer and numerous birds are common. About a mile later,
the paddlers arrive at the "Narrows", an area with vertical pilings creating a
flow restriction (for ecology reasons). Padders should check the flow level
at this point and if concerned about the current should pull over to either
bank and haul the canoe around the flow restriction. After the Narrows, the
paddlers enter the lower marsh and for the next mile and a half enjoy the
sites and sounds of a pretty valley and its broad cattail marsh. Following
the main channel paddlers will arrive back at BayCreek's site adjacent to
Empire Boulevard.
